“SINULOG FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS THE 28TH CELEBRATION OF ARAW NG SOUTHWESTERN POBLACION, CALAMBA, MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL”

Barangay Southwestern Poblacion, Calamba, Misamis Occidental celebrated its 28th Araw ng Southwestern last January 17, 2010 with the theme “KAHIUSAHAN, KALAMBOAN, DUYOG SA PAGSAULOG SA PISTA SENYOR”. One of its highlight is the Sinulog Festival.

The third Sunday of the Month of January is the feast of Senior Santo Niño. Barangay Southwestern, Calamba, Misamis Occidental joined the nationwide celebration of the feast of Senior Santo Niño.

The Sinulog Festival started with a Dianalog as early as 3:30 in the morning. The Dianalog is a bisayan term, wherein devotees parade the Patron along the streets in the Poblacion Area with a beat of drums and Sinulog Music.

The San Isidro Parish held the Sinulog in the morning after the second mass. The participants performed the Sinulog Ritual in front of the image of Senior Santo Niño in front of the Catholic Church.  The participants were the students from the Sacred Heart College (Elementary Department, High School Department and College Department), Southwestern Poblacion, Don Bernardo A. Neri and other Catholic Organizations. They performed despite of the heavy rain. It did not stop them to do the dance moves with a beat of drums and other musical instruments.

In the afternoon, the Southwestern Poblacion initiated the Sinulog Festival as part of the 28th celebration of Araw ng Southwestern. The activity spearheaded by Barangay Captain Ezel T. Villanueva.

The festival started with a Sinulog Street Dancing, wherein devotees, constituents especially from Barangay Southwestern Poblacion and from the nearby barangays, and participants danced in the streets bringing with them the image of Senior Santo Niño. The dancers wear colorful costumes, makeup, bringing unique props and dance to the new Sinulog drum beats. The street dancing routes from Southwestern Pob. Barangay Hall passed by the streets of Don Bernardo A. Neri, Solinog, and Northern Poblacion then back to SWP Barangay hall for the Sinulog Showdown.

The streets of SWP were so busy with people and vehicles. Almost all of the people in the Poblacion area proceed to the SWP Barangay Hall to witness the much awaited yearly Sinulog Showdown.

The performers showed their best in doing the Sinulog rituals with a constant beating of drums and other musical instruments in an overcrowded venue. Each groups told a story through dances that reveals the Filipino faith to Senior Santo Niño.

Fewer groups participates compare to last year. There were only 6 contingents. The contingents were from Purok 1, Purok 2, Purok 3 and Don Bernardo A. Neri.

Municipal Officials headed Mayor Dr. Luisito B. Villanueva, Jr., MNSA supported the activity.

The constituents especially the performers were so thankful to Senior Santo Niño of the good weather during the Sinulog Showdown.

The activity was successful because of the joined efforts of the Barangay officials headed by Barangay Captain Ezel T. Villanueva, Purok Presidents, the Atay family and all the constituents of Barangay Southwestern Poblacion.
