“MENAJAK FESTIVAL 2009 OF CALAMBA, MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL”
After one year of waiting once again the Municipality of Calamba, Misamis Occidental now celebrated the much awaited MENAJAK FESTIVAL 2009 with this year’s theme: “PADAYON PAGLAMBO CALAMBA UBAN SA KATAWHAN NGA NAGKAHIUSA”. Menajak Festival is the main highlight of the celebration of the 61st Araw ng Calamba. The contingents showed to the audience what Menajak is. The Menajak festival is a competition comprising of street dancing and tableau that features the colorful culture and tradition of the Subanen Tribe in Calamba, Misamis Occidental.
The celebration of the 61st Araw ng Calamba lasts for 5 days started February 9 and ended on the 14th of February when Menajak Festival expose.
Contingent # I were students from College of Communication, Information and Technology (CCIT) sponsored by Barangays Bunawan, LIbertad, Dapacan Alto, Dapacan Bajo and Mauswagon; contingent # 2 students from Liberation Institute (LI) sponsored by Barangays Calaran, Langub, Magcamiguing, Singalat and Sulipat, contingent # 3 students from Calamba National Comprehensive High School (CNCHS) sponsored by Southwestern Pob., Don Bernardo A. Neri, Northern Pob. And Solinog; contingent # 4 students from Sacred Heart College-High School Dept. sponsored by Barangays San Isidro, Siloy, Bonifacio, Mamalad and Salvador.
The contingents clothed in dark-colored costumes mostly red and black colors and dance to the rhythm of drums, trumpets, native gongs and other musical instruments.
As early as 8:00 o’clock in the morning, streets in the Poblacion area are full of viewers from the nearby municipalities, barangays and constituents in the Poblacion area all wanting to witness the street dancing. The hot weather is not a hindrance for them to watch the presentation. Students from the different schools were so excited watching and cheering their co-students while performing in the streets. The street dance started at the Municipal Quadrangle and passed the streets of Southwestern Poblacion, Don Bernardo A. Neri, Solinog, and Northern Pobacion then back to Municipal Quadrangle. The three (3) judges of the street dancing competition posted at Park and Go area, terminal area and the last and final judge posted at Rizal Rotunda.
At 1 o’clock in the afternoon people trooped to the Municipal Quadrangle to witness the Tableau Competition and search for Menajak Festival Queen 2009. The breath taking performance of the contingents tells the unique culture and costumes of the Subanen Tribes.
The contingents were judged according to their performance and choreography, including mastery of the dance, costumes, props, including appropriateness of costume, choice of color and style and music including rhythm.

The Sacred Heart College High School Department got the four major (4) awards including and the special award which is the best in costumes and became the over all champion of the Menajak Festival 2009 then followed by National Comprehensive High School that got the 2nd prize in street dancing and tableau competition.
Miss. Loraine Villanueva of Sacred Heart College High School Department was crown as Menajak Festival Queen 2009
The Menajak Festival 2009 was successful through the efforts of the Local Government Unit of Calamba, Misamis Occidental spearheaded by Municipal Mayor Dr. Luisito B. Villanueva, Jr., MNSA.
