    The Cumberland, Maryland, USA Medical Mission Group in coordination with the Calamba Inter Local Health Zone, the 1st Congressional District and the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental held a 5 days surgical, medical, and dental mission on November 6-10, 2006 at the Calamba District Hospital, Calamba, Misamis Occidental.

     The surgical, medical and dental mission was consist of a dedicated group of volunteer surgeons/doctors and medical specialists from Cumberland, Maryland, USA and the local doctors, nurses, dentist and other volunteers from Oroquieta City, Ozamis City, Iligan City, Cagayan de Oro City, Bukidnon, Davao City, Zamboanga del Sur, Leyte,  Cebu  City, Ifugao and Manila. This volunteer surgeons/doctors, medical specialists and dentists came to provide free surgical,  free medical, free dental services and free medicines to the many disadvantaged local communities, health impaired individuals and indigents patients. This includes patients from the municipalities of Calamba, Plaridel, Baliangao, Sapang Dalaga and Concepcion.  


    When the Medical Team arrived, more than 144 patients were already registered for surgery. The patients were pre-tested by their respective Municipal Health Officers and by Dr. Erickson Jumalon’s staff at the hospital. There was also a one day pre-screening of patients a day before the mission.


    During the 5-day mission in CDH, the surgical, medical and dental mission treated over 3,224 patients (children, adults and elderly). The people received the health care they desperately needed. Poor patients who cannot afford to see a physician for their ailments had their chance.  The number of patients seen was exhausting. Every minute the crowds grew larger and larger. There were hundreds of patients waiting to be treated by the doctors.

    Our Surgical Team from the USA was composed of Dr. Lemuel G. Villanueva (Obgyn), Dr. Robert J. Carpenter (Plastic Surgeon), Dr. Conrad R. Zapanta (ENT-Head neck Surgeon), Dr. Benjamin del Carmen, Dr. Juan A. Arrisueño and assistant surgeon      Mrs. Gladys S. Arrisueño. Local surgical team were Dr. Joel Jizdub Ruiz, Dr. Stephen M. Bergado (General Surgeon) and Dr. Randy Guangco. The surgeons were able to perform 84 major surgeries and 93 minor surgeries in an operating room at the Calamba District Hospital.
 

      
    Our medical teams from the USA, led by Dr. Romulo G. Villanueva, Jr. (ENT), consist of among others, Condrado G. Villanueva (Pulmonary Therapist) and Grace Villanueva Tan (Nurse).  Local medical teams were Dr. Ellen Gay T. Areola (Pediatrician), Dr. Ramon Moreno (Internal Medicine), Dr. Jesse Joy Rivera (Pediatrician), Dr. Mario Chan (Ortho/Surgeon), Dr. Mae V. Taleon, Dr. Emmanuel Cale (Internal Medicine), Dr. Diana A. Maglinte (Pediatrician)  and RJ C. Obciana (Physician Assistant). The medical team consulted 2,630 patients and dispensed medicines to over 3,000 patients during the five (5) days surgical, medical and dental mission. Most of the patient received their prescribed medicines.

    The Anesthesiologists from the USA were Dr. Moheb Michael Mosa, Dr. Van Alan Valenta and Dr. Sofronio B. De la Vega. Local anesthesiologists were Milagros B. Inhumang, Dr. Fereve S. Pacatan, Dr. Ilani Aguilos and Dr. Anthony Guzman.

    The dentists were Dr. Hector B. Maniaul, Melvin H. Villaruz, and Dr. Precious S. Santiago. Dentists from the Philippine National Police (PNP Region 10) also volunteered for these outreach programs were Psupt. Eddie F. Langcaoun DMD, PC Insp. Gerardo B. Gonzalez, P Insp. Ritzhie N. Ligaya, PO3 Charl Cajeles and SPO3 Yolando O. Bordeos (Dental Aide).  For dental cases there were 417 patients. 

    Some of the volunteers came from Mayor Hilario A. Ramiro Sr. Regional Teaching and Training Hospital (MHARSRTTH) were Mrs. Phoebe G. Pangilinan (Nurse), and Mrs. Edna E. Solis (Midwife). Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center was Dr. Jason B. Ramirez a Radiologist. City Government of Oroquieta City was Dr. Guillermo I. Flores and Isagani M. Tillo, Pvt. Francis Nelly C. Pamona (Nurse) of 1st Infantry TABAK Division and PO2 Mabeth O. Bodbod (Med Tech) of PNP Region 10.  

    Also of equal importance were the supports of other untiring volunteers: Rev. Daniel C. Stemple from West Virginia, USA, Pastor Wenceslao Gallardo from Davao City, Mr. Guyde Evasco (Sonographer), Mrs. Luz Gallardo (Social Worker) and Ms. Bridgette V. Abregana (Recorder).

    Calamba District Hospital was a good place to perform surgeries with a well trained staff and complete surgical facilities. CDH chief of hospital Dr. ERICSON JUMALON together with his hospital staff, doctors, nurses and other medical specialists also participated in the 5 days surgical, medical and dental mission.

    The Western Maryland Hospital of Cumberland, USA donated two (2) anesthesia machines that were use during the mission at the CDH. The hospital also donated lots of anesthetic agents, surgical supplies and medicines.    

    The project would not have been successful without the presence of Filipino and American doctors and other medical specialists from Cumberland, Maryland; Atlanta, Georgia; Harrisonburg, Virginia; Illinois; San Diego, California; Pitsburg, Pennsylvania and Baltimore, Maryland USA headed by Dr. ROMULO G. VILLANUEVA, JR.

    This surgical, medical and dental mission was sponsored by the Cumberland, Maryland, USA Medical Mission Group. Likewise, the success of this surgical, medical and dental mission was attained in coordination with Inter Local Health Zone composed of five Municipalities/LGU namely Calamba, Baliangao, Plaridel, Sapang Dalaga and Concepcion; the 1st Congressional District and the Provincial Government Office of Misamis Occidental.

    Employees from the Local Government Unit of Calamba, Misamis Occidental and   RHU personnel and Barangay Health Workers (BHW) from the five municipalities rendered also their help to make this surgical, medical and dental mission a successful one.

    Dipolog Medical Center senior nursing students also participated in this free clinic activity.

   The dedication, sincerity, patience, effort, money and time all the volunteers from the USA based doctors and the local doctors and other volunteers showed during the mission really touched the heart of the people (My countryman). They feel that they are important enough and worthy of the free service the volunteers rendered.  It was an amazing and successful medical, surgical and dental mission considering all the difficulties and tiring jobs that the all the volunteers and participants faced.
