A quick-spreading fire burned the whole block A of the Calamba Public Market, Calamba, Misamis Occidental last December 12, 2007 at 2:30 in the morning. Report said that the fire started at one of the stall inside the Calamba Public Market.
At 2:30 A.M. Mr. Cruz Porlares the Market Bldg. Guard personally informed the Calamba Fire Station about the fire incident at Calamba Public Market, dry goods section located along Militante St., Brgy. Don Bernardo A. Neri, Calamba, Misamis Occidental. After FO1 Rexel M. Hisula was personally informed, the Bureau of Fire Personnel of Calamba Fire Station immediately responded the report.
The fire started at around 2:30 in the morning in one of the stall at Calamba Public Market.
Forty (40) stalls at Calamba Public Market were burned during the devastating fire at the Public Market early on Wednesday morning. The fire spread rapidly through the dry good section, which is located at the right part of the public market. As of 3:00 A.M., the fire had already reached the end side of Block A of Calamba Public Market. The fire spread easily because some of the stalls in the market were made of light materials caused the flames to move very quickly. Firefighters said the entire Block A of the Public Market was in flames within just a few minutes. ¼ Part of the market property was on fire about a few minutes after the blaze started at the middle part of Block A of the public market.
The fire destroyed the whole block and the entire stores contains in the public market, including rice, spare parts, clothes and other goods and leave nothing but only roof.
Residents worriedly watched the thick smoke rise from the market area. Constituents were very thankful that the fire did not spread at the other part of the public market. People who witnessed the fire incidents panicked and no one thought that the fire would get so big.
The fire caused major damage to the Public Market, but did not spread the adjacent part of the Public Market and nearby residents.
Fire investigators initial finding that caused the fire or that the fire may have started was an electrical short circuit and the fire originated at one of the stall inside the Block A of the public market. From the record of the Calamba Fire Station, an early morning fire caused an estimated damage of more or less P3, 000,000.00 and no injuries were reported. Their investigation showed that nobody is a suspect for the fire incident and no one to be blamed. A BFP finding is negative so it’s not a human error.
Firemen and fire trucks from the nearby municipalities namely Jimenez; Aloran; Oroquieta City and Plaridel of Misamis Occidental; Rizal, Piñan and Dapitan City of Zamboanga del Norte also responded but it was already too late when they arrived at the fire scene the entire block had already burned. Thought they were late in responding but they still helped the Calamba firefighters and other volunteers to prevent the fire from spreading to the other side of the market, establishments and nearby houses. Twenty five (25) Bureau of Fire Personnel and four (4) volunteers responded.
Store holders/owners and people witness the fire helped dousing the stores with water to prevent the fire from spreading and some even helped in packing-up things.
Municipal Mayor Dr. Luisito B. Villanueva, Jr., MNSA immediately visited the area and checking how huge the fire is. He felt sad when he saw how big the damage is.
The fire was brought under control after more than fifteen minutes. At 2:45 A.M. fire was completely contained. The fire-out declaration is 3:30 A.M.
Further investigation will be conducted by the Calamba Fire Station just to make sure if there is no negligence on the part of the stall holder where the fire started.
